Financial wellness Budget categories help
Budget categories are the rows that organize expected income, bills, debt, savings, flexible spending, and matched transaction activity.
Last updated 2026-07-05
Budget categories are the rows inside your monthly Budget. They help organize planned amounts, cleared activity, remaining room, due dates, rollovers, and review suggestions.
Categories are planning tools. They do not create bank accounts, move funds, pay bills, or guarantee that money will be available.
Category Types
Each category has a type:
Income: expected money coming in.Fixed bill: recurring or important bills.Flexible spend: everyday spending that can often be adjusted.Savings: planned savings or cushion-building.Debt: debt payments.Custom: anything that does not fit the standard types.
Category type affects how the Budget summarizes essentials, flexible spending, debt, savings, and review status.
Planned, Spent, And Remaining
Each category row shows:
Spent: cleared transactions matched to that category for the budget period.Planned: the amount you set for that category.Remaining: planned amount minus matched activity, adjusted by any goal-funded or rollover amounts shown in the row.Review: a plain-language status such asOn track,Needs budget,No activity yet, or an over-budget amount.Due date: useful for bills and debt payments.Rollover: whether unused or overspent amounts can carry into another Budget.
If a category has no planned amount but has spending, the Budget may mark it as needing review.
Adding Or Editing Categories
Use Add category to create a new Budget row. You can enter a name, type, planned amount, and due date.
Use the pencil action on an existing row to edit:
- name;
- type;
- due date;
- planned amount;
- rollover behavior.
Use archive when a row no longer belongs in the active Budget. Archived rows are removed from the active category table, but historical records may still be retained where required for support, audit, or product history.
When you create a new month, Naverica may copy active categories from the most recent prior Budget. Review copied names, amounts, due dates, and rollover settings before saving changes, especially if a bill ended, a debt payment changed, or a savings target no longer applies.
How Spending Matches A Category
Budget category activity comes from matching cleared transactions to the category. Matching may use:
- the transaction category, such as
Food and drink; - a recurring obligation match, such as a confirmed utility bill;
- category changes or rules you created in Transactions;
- manual transactions and imports after they are saved.
Pending transactions may appear in transaction review areas, but Budget actuals should be treated carefully until activity clears. If the wrong transaction is counted in a category, review the transaction category first.
For transaction category changes, see Financial wellness transactions help.
Viewing Matched Transactions
Select the spent amount or the eye action to open matched transactions for a category. The drawer shows:
- expected planned amount;
- matched amount this month;
- remaining amount;
- status such as
Seen this monthorNot seen this month; - transaction date, merchant, amount, category, account, and pending or posted status.
If no transactions match, check whether the transaction is still pending, outside the budget period, assigned to another category, or not synced yet.
Budget Suggestions
Some category rows can show a Budget suggestion. Suggestions may appear when cleared activity is over budget, approaching a limit, stale, or showing positive progress.
Suggestion actions include:
Mark reviewed: use when you reviewed the issue or changed the Budget.Dismiss for now: hides the suggestion temporarily. It may return later if the same issue remains.
Suggestions are not instructions. They are prompts to review the Budget and transaction details.
Category Suggestions
Review suggestions can show suggested categories when Naverica has enough available data and the feature is unlocked. A suggestion may include name, type, planned amount, due date, explanation, and confidence.
You can:
- edit the suggested name, type, amount, or due date before accepting;
- skip a suggestion and continue to the next one;
- reject a suggestion;
- accept a suggestion into the Budget.
If suggestions are unavailable, manual categories still work.
Rollovers
Rollover settings control how leftover or overspent category amounts can carry into a future Budget:
Do not carry: no rollover.Carry unused: carry positive remaining room.Carry overspend: carry negative remaining room.Carry both: carry either unused or overspent amounts.
Use rollovers carefully. They can help keep continuity, but they can also make a new month look tighter or looser than expected if old category activity no longer applies.
When To Contact Support
Contact in-app support if:
- matched transactions do not load;
- a category stays incorrect after you refresh totals and correct transaction categories;
- a suggestion keeps returning after you mark it reviewed;
- you cannot add, edit, or archive a category;
- a rollover amount looks wrong after creating a new Budget.
Do not send screenshots with private transaction details, full exports, account numbers, bank credentials, one-time codes, or identity documents by email.
